Birdland

Group of penguins at Birdland

Birdland is in the heart of Cotswold village Bourton-On-The-Water and is home to over 500 birds! They vary from flamingos to cranes, penguins, storks, owls, parrots and more. I first visited Birdland as a small child so it was great to visit again recently with my own children.

As you first enter Birdland you immediately meet the penguin enclosure. The only breeding King Penguins in England live here along with a group of Humboldts. They have a big tank to swim in within their enclosure. It has glass walls so you can watch them underwater.

The Out Of Africa area has lots of lovely pink flamingos and hornbills as well as many other birds.

We liked the lovely desert house avairy too. It was a lovely spot to sit and have a rest while watching the birds.

The birds in the desert house are all little birds. The park is also home to the big rhea birds which are part of the ostrich family.

As well as all the birds there is also a Jurassic dinosaur adventure in the woodlands. Start at the gate where you’ll find a wrecked jeep and the beginning of the story.

As you follow the path through the woods you’ll come across lots of different dinosaurs with information boards about each one.

We really enjoyed this area and it gave the kids a chance to run around a bit without worrying about disturbing the birds.

Birdland has an obstacle course play park, indoor play area, loads of picnic benches, cafe and shop. It has all the facilities you could possibly need.

Currently (August 2020) you need to book your time slot in advance as capacity has been limited to help with social distancing. Hand santiser is available around the site. I would recommend booking the later slot 4-6pm as this was much quieter than the other slots.

The Verdict

Birdland is a lovely place to visit for all ages. There’s a great variety of birds to see as well as fun areas to explore. The site is suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs and the staff were all really friendly. I’d like to visit again once the keeper talks and feeds are back up and running.
