Free Places To Visit In Oxfordshire

I don’t know about you but as we look ahead to our holiday plans this year we are trying our best to save the pennies wherever we can.  As a result of this I’m hoping to make our school holidays and weekends as frugal as possible by trying out free activities.  I’ve found loads so thought I’d share all the free places to visit in Oxfordshire. 

• The Oxfordshire Museum in Woodstock has lots of interactive displays covering just about everything possible in the history of Oxfordshire.  From animals and wildlife to Roman remains and science experiments there is loads for kids to have a go at.  The best thing about it is entry is free!

• Visit Island Farm Donkey Sanctuary in Brightwell Cum Sotwell and give the donkeys some love.  This wonderful charity rescues donkeys from all over the country.  It provides them with veterinary care and loving home.  The donkeys love lots of fuss from their visitors.  Donations are of course welcome.

• The Vale & Downland Museum in Wantage is a fab little place full of history and activities.  We particularly loved all the different costumes to try on and seeing the Williams F1 car on display.  The museum is free to visit and well worth a trip.

• The Ashmolean Museum in Oxford is a very well known museum in Oxford.  The museum is free to visit and has a huge collection of historical artifacts.  I remember it being one of the very first school trips I ever went on in primary school!

• Go for a walk up Wittenham Clumps or White Horse Hill.  Who can be the first to the top?  Parking is free and we usually take a kite and a picnic with us.  Wittenham Clumps is a great place to spot aircraft flying over to nearby RAF Benson too.

• Go to a park.  There’s nothing kids love more than to explore a park they’ve never been to before.  I’ve heard Cutteslowe Park in Oxford is good.  It’s on our ‘to visit’ list for 2018.

• The Natural History Museum in Oxford is one of my children’s favourite museums because of its dinosaur skeletons.  It’s  a fascinating place to visit with childrens trails to follow too.  It is joined on to the Pitt Rivers museum and both are free to visit.

• If you’re children like horses then take them along to Redwings Oxhill in Banbury.  Redwings is an equine charity with several different horse sanctuaries across the country.  I remember my Aunt adopting a horse for me from Redwings as a child and I loved receiving letters from it in the post!  Oxhill is home to around 90 rescues and they love to have visitors.  The sanctuary is open to the public on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays 10am-4pm all year round.  It is completely free to visit and has a cafe, shop and picnic area too.
